On Legends of Tomorrow… Or The Problem with Diversity

No. The title isn’t clickbait. Legends of Tomorrow is an incredibly unique show in that it’s kind of a recipe for disaster. It’s a show that focuses on a number of C-List at best Comic Book Characters who you’re expected to care about even though you’ve likely never heard of them unless you have a deeper investment in the world of Cape Comics and somehow they find a way to get you to care. The show is by absolutely no means perfect, but it makes no attempt to apologize for the fact that they know damn well that you aren’t watching this because you’re invested in Cape Comic Lore but because it’s a spin off of a spin off and that’s about it.

In their willingness to own that, though, it gives them a lot of creative freedom that they aren’t granted when working on the more B-List Hero oriented shows where they’re beholden to the desperate need of trying to get you to respect someone like Green Arrow and The Flash on the same level as Batman and Superman. That creative freedom allows them an ability to be a lot more fleshed out and complex than you’d expect, putting you in a number of situations where you’re really left with no choice but to root for them as they’re fighting not necessarily to save the world and all of humanity (which they fuck up doing regularly) but to literally save their own humanity.

And they ruined it.

With Diversity.

And I can’t even believe that I’m saying that but here I am saying it without really any apology.

Diversity is likely what killed Legends of Tomorrow because it ended up being the problem that it likely insisted it was solving: Making the show deeply problematic as fuck.

As a fair warning – this will likely be long so here is your point to jump off if you don’t want to be sucked into what will more than likely be an incredibly long tirade of anger and frustration at not the loss of potential but the outright death of it in any capacity.
